White Christmas!

Post Note: I batched all the pics I wanted to post so that they'd be really small and they'd post fast. I guess I overdid it because the pictures look really bad because they are so small. Just so no one thinks that our skin really has a green hue to it and realize that the weird rainbow look on the walls is really just due to the distortion of the picture quality!
Shoot, I didn't feel like I was covered up in the picture when we took it. Not that I was feeling all that snazzy, but I really did want to be in the picture! Growing up, every Christmas morning, we had to get in line and take a picture before we could go see what Santa brought us. As much torture as this tradition was, I inflict it on my kids just the same. Unfortunately, we didn't instill enough fear in Ruby about going downstairs without us. She claimed that she just "peeked", but then she told Alice that she had a Peter Pan movie and that was buried in Alice's stocking. It was clear that she'd been down there taking careful inventory.
Among lots of other reasons we were sad not to travel to Colorado for Christmas this year was the fact that we know we can count on a white Christmas when we are there. Washington surprised us this year! I know not everyone was as lucky, but where my parents live, we had snow! It actually snowed a long time, but didn't accumulate very much. Still, there is something so magical about snow on Christmas!
Ruby and Alice got to open their present from Grandma and Grandpa Pierce. It was an art easel and cool paints, paintbrushes and extra paper rolls. They were pleased and since having used it...they LOVE it! THANKS!

My dad likes to wear this Santa coat on Christmas morning. :)
I don't know if you can tell in this picture, but one of Ruby's gifts was this horrible hair coloring system for kids. She really wanted it, so I picked it up when I saw it at Costco, but it's messy! She loves it and that makes it fun. She wore pink and blue the first time.

I'm not a fancy, brand name girl. No Coach bags for me. I score deals from my friend who owns a purse business and usually get by for years with one or two solid generic purses. I know this brand (can't even remember the name of it) isn't fancy, fancy, but it cost more than twenty bucks, so it is fancy to me. Anyway, I really don't see things often and really, really want them. Well, that's not true. I usually buy them if I really, really want them. Anyway, this purse was at Macy's for months and I was drawn to it so many times that I decided I must really want it. However, I wouldn't spend the money on it. I showed it to my friend Mimi and she said she'd tell Chris about it. She's so great! I didn't think for a second that I was really going to get it, and I noticed the night before Christmas Eve that they were all sold out. Anyway, Mimi bought it for Chris, who paid her and gave it to me and it was in the box and everything. He never even looked at it! Anyway, it is perfectly casual and fun and it will hold a size five diaper and wipes! I love it!Chris got a great book full of family letters. On his side of the family, they send an email aroudn every month with a little letter from all the family in it. He has a small family with only four cousins and one aunt and one uncle and his grandma, so it isn't that big. Anyway, we enjoy reading them every month and I always save them all but never know if I'll ever truly preserve them. Well, his uncle, Billy, printed off the first volume a year or so ago and we treasure it. This year, we got another volume that is almost current! What a great family history! It is really motivating to write the letter when I know that I can record what we are going through and have at least a monthly record to show my kids. THANKS!
Anyone with little girls know that they love to play with makeup...BUT IT IS REALLY HARD to find pretend makeup that is truly PRETEND...no lipgloss and cakey eyeshadow to find all over the floor and all over your child's face. I throw that stuff away faster than it can be forgotten by my girls. I found a little purse of plastic makeup at http://www.ttgo.com/ and I was all over it!

What could be better than this kind of reaction? What was all the excitement about?
A KITTY! We got a cat for the girls for Christmas!
Unfortunately, the rescue wouldn't give us a kitten because of the ages of our kids, and so we got a six month old kitty. Ruby told us she would want a black cat, and so that is what Chris picked out. I am not a cat person, and I've never had one before, but they are so much less work than dogs and it is so much fun to wow the kids, that I went for it. I'm trying to get used to her. Ruby named her Isabella. (SO SORRY to all the beautiful girls out there with that gorgeous name, Ruby likes it too!) We call her "Izzy" for short and mostly just "kitty". My only hope for her name was that it wouldn't be "Princess". Thank goodness that idea didn't enter her mind!
Uncle Jordan, a.k.a. "the best uncle in the world" got all the girls wands for Christmas. He knows them well, as they were a big hit!

Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve has always included a reenactment of the birth of Jesus Christ. The kids really look forward to it and though we always expect to have several "Mary's", we've always had willing volunteers for Joseph. Ruby was Mary, Alice was a shepherd, Hailey was Joseph and Emma was an Angel. Baby Carson played the peaceful of baby Jesus.

Robb and Heather got thier family a new puppy, "Digby". They opened him early as they had to travel with him for the holiday. He's a nice mellow puppy, so far!
Alice got to hold her cousin Carson! What a sweet baby boy he is! I want one!
We put together gingerbread houses in three different teams. I didn't get any pictures of the process because I was working away at our house...and trying to keep a head of Alice eating all the candy!
Heather and Robb's team
Jordan, Braden, Amanda and Mom and Dad's team.

My family's team!
We always had a tradition of drawing names for Christmas and opening that gift on Christmas Eve together. It was fun to be together since it was technically the in-law's Christmas.

Ruby wanted to leave treats for Santa and a carrot for the reindeer. It was late and way past bedtime, so I just grabbed a carrot from the fridge and slapped it on top of a (demolished) rice crispy wreath someone brought over for us. Ruby wanted a bit of the carrot before bed.

New Year's Eve Eve Gathering

I have a really big family on both sides! My mom's family gathers every Christmas Eve Eve for a dinner and white elephant exchange. It is a lot of fun and is a little piece of chaos as well. We gathered at Carol and Duncan's house this year, as it is the only place that can really hold us anymore. As busy as it was, I would say that we were well under half of potential capacity!

I love these pictures of the kids eating. The best part is that Eli and Paige are the children of my cousins! It is fun to see my kids look forward to seeing their second cousins almost as much as they look forward to seeing their first cousins.
Paige and Ruby both looked forward to reuniting the whole week previous. They became friends last summer in McCall. I love that we all have time in McCall to rely on in order to keep all the family friendships alive.
Alice is no stranger to a good dessert!

This is a row full of my first cousins. We still have such a nice time together.

Ice Skating

Ever since we went to Disney on Ice, Ruby has been prancing around the house pretending to be in an ice skating show. We decided it was time to let her see how fun (hard) it really is! I was shocked at how hard it was for me after all these years!

Side note: I love to dress my kids cute. However, I have never made it an issue of force. In fact, I try my hardest to compliment them up and down no matter what they choose to wear. I just don't want to make it seem like what they have on is all that important (even though secretly, it is important to me--maybe that's why I don't want them to worry about it). Anyway, I place a lot of confidence in the ability of other people to look at my kids and think "how adorable, she must have chosen her own clothing today". Well...this ice skating get up was really hard for me to swallow. I couldn't post the pictures without saying so (though I really tried). I love that she was all about fashion over function (well it's not fashionable, but I mean that to her, it was more important to look like an ice skating pro than to be warm and have cushion to break her fall), but it was still REALLY hard to muster up my excitement for her when she came at me wearing this get up.
This didn't end well.

Alice's Prenap Fun

This is not what you want to find when you go to wake your kid up from a nap! No diaper on!

Alice's first (professional) haircut...

The way my kids' hair grows, at some point, you need a professional to step in and make sure the baby mullet look isn't taking over. Alice was not thrilled with the idea of someone else cutting her hair, but she didn't rebel, she just sat very seriously and did everything the stylist asked of her. The result was darling. Not a huge change, but still, a cut always makes them look a little older! I do have to mention that when I was getting her dressed that morning, she spotted this summer sweater in the closet and she had to wear it! This goes down in history as the first adamant wardrobe request Alice has ever made! Thankfully, I don't get worked up over what they choose to wear, but she's like two years a head of Ruby when it comes to opinions!
Ruby decided she wanted a haircut as well, so we went for it. Notice the marker makeup. She was so pleased that the stylist noticed her makeup job!

Marker Makeup

Ruby always wants to put makeup on. It is a daily conversation, and I assume it will continue until she is old enough to wear makeup. Anyway, she found a way today as she colored her lips red with marker adn her fingernails blue. So pretty!

Making Sugar Cookies

I bought the sheets of sugar cookies (because it would have been unrealistic to think I'd actually get around to making the dough) so we could just cut, cook and decorate. They had fun, but only really participated long enough to frost and decorate one and eat it!

Preschool Christmas Play

Ruby was thrilled to participate in a Christmas play with her preschool classmates. It was set up like a toy store, and she was a little dancer. It was a really cute and simple skit that gave all the kids a chance to participate.

Slumber party...

My friend Sommer and I both moved (almost the same day) last year. She moved 40 minutes away and I miss her so much! We still get together and keep the kids in touch, but it isn't the same as the ease of having that friend you know you can drop your kids off with at a moments notice and that no matter what you say or do, she gets you. I took for granted that she was my sewing buddy...no one in my new neighborhood/ward sews! I still have kindred spirits six miles away, but it isn't as easy to get toghether like we used to. Anyway, Sommer and I have enjoyed several overnighters when we just sew until really late after the kids are down and we catch up while we're at it. This was our first trip to "S", where they live. It was a late night with good conversation and satisfying progress on a quilt I am making.

Cookie Exchange

I invited a few friends over for a cookie exchange. We each brought six dozen cookies and left with a nice variety of goodies to take around to our neighbors. I made Gingersnaps.

Superstar!

Isn't that apron adorable? Sage and Mike sent them for the girls' birthdays. This one is actually Alice's, but Ruby put it on the other day and with her glasses, she ran around posing and saying "Superstar!"

Preschool Piano class

We are so lucky to know about Joanie's Suzuki Piano class! Even though I am grateful that my mother insisted that I learn to play the piano, the thought of attempting the same feat with my own child seemed daunting. That is when I heard about this class! It is so fun and very child-driven. The theory is based on learning to play by ear with fun, inventive ways to subtly teach basic theory. The kids learn to play songs from the get go, and Ruby plays many times a day. She knows how to play several versions of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" and can play with both her left and right hands (not at the same time). I get to stay and enjoy the class and I just beam the whole time because Joanie is super entertaining and the kids really get into it. I honestly would struggle to move away just because I want all of my kids to have this experience! It has taught Ruby so much confidence and to "be a trier".

Swallowing pills

My Ruby is only five and she swallows pills now with no hesitation! I am so impressed! Maybe this is normal, but I was extremely abnormal in that case. In order to get the pill down, I would stand with my mouth open and say "ahhhhh" and my dad would have to throw the pill way back in my throat for me to swallow it down. I can't tell you how many times it almost obstructed my breathing OR wasn't back far enough so I had to spit it out and tell him to try again.

When I was maybe 14, I was on some medicine, probably for acne or lying or something. I wanted to go to Medford with my aunt and uncle and my dad said that I couldn't go unless I learned to take my pills on my own. Of course, as is usually true anytime a parent finally puts their foot down, I was capable to do it on my own. However, I still couldn't just put it casually in my mouth and swallow it down, I had to imitate the same throwing motion that my dad used and it usually took several attempts.

The wait is over...

Our good friends, Jeff, Kerry and Sam brought home their beautiful baby girl, Elizabeth in October. It took some doing to arrange to take her pics, but the day finally came on her six week birthday last week! She was having a reportedly rough day that day, but we still managed to capture her sweet nature.
